Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has cancelled a death warrant for William Lee Thompson, 74, who was convicted of murder in Miami-Dade County. It is the first time DeSantis has withdrawn a death warrant. A second execution was still set to go ahead Tuesday.
The decision came days after a botched lethal injection involving Christa Pike raised fresh scrutiny over Florida's capital punishment procedures. The governor provided no statement for withdrawing the warrant for Thompson specifically.
